2.2: Layout Principles

  When coming up with an effective layout for any page, there are certain rules that need to be followed. The basic principles of design are the following: proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast (balance is also added as a layout principle by some). 

   Proximity: the grouping together of related items, often placed close together so they are seen as one unified collection. Unrelated items should not be grouped together as to not confuse the reader/viewer. One thing to remember when deciding on your page's proximity is eye direction/movement. You want to make sure you have full control over your viewer's eyes. Lead them to where you want them to go (from one place to another in a certain order). 

    Alignment: determines how effective your layout design will be, and helps to draw the viewer's eye to the element of your design that you want to emphasize. 

     Repetition: some aspect is repeated throughout your composition, giving consistency. A repetitive element can be anything from a bullet or colour, to a design element or format. Includes anything that the viewer can be used to keep their eye moving throughout the layout.

      

      Contrast: the best ways to provide visual interest to your composition. Elements that do not match or are different, then differentiate them entirely (make them opposites). For example, warm and cool colours or small fonts and big fonts.
