White Space and Type
Activity 2.4: White Space and Type
White Space - (Jodi Miller, n.d.)
White space, or negative space, is the empty areas in a photo or image. They are the places within an image that are free of text and visuals. The white space of a photo or webpage allows for the viewer to feel comfortable, without feeling overwhelmed with text or graphics. White space can also be used to break up pieces of information that are unrelated, instead of grouping everything together.
The study of type consists of four parts but only two will be discussed in this post: typography and typeface.
Typography (Slides on Google Classroom, March 8)
Typography could involve choosing the colour, size, boldness, and type of font depending on the mood or vibe that is supposed to be given by the text in an image or alone.
Typefaces - (what-when-how.com, n.d.)
Typeface refers to typesets that are already standardized and set up. These include, Times New Roman (which I'm typing with right now), Courier, Trebuchet, Arial, Verdana, etc. These fonts can also be set to various font sizes, bolded, and italicized. Typefaces can be classified as Serif (fonts that have little vertical and horizontal lines at the ends of letters), Sans-Serif (opposite of serif fonts), Script (fonts to stimulate handwriting), and Display fonts (decorative fonts).
My Reflection:
Matching your text with the feel or vibe of your topic or context is essential! Your viewers need to feel comfortable and understand what your advertisement or paper is about. For example, you wouldn't use the font Times New Roman with font size 12 to advertise a new drink for a restaurant.

We use fonts for almost everything we write. I really liked how you talked about the different texts. Good work on your post!
ReplyDeleteIt is good to know that not all white space is bad because usually having white space makes something look empty, but this is also useful. Nice Work! :)
