Brief History of Animation Techniques
Unit 4 Activity 2
This post is a short history of animation. The timeline will cover from the years 18 000 BCE - 1834.
18 000 BCE: Paintings, indicating prehistoric humans trying to capture movement by these paintings, were found on cave walls in Spain.
2000 BCE: Images were drawn by Greeks and Romans depicting movement in their pottery.
1660s: Chinese developed "Magic Lanterns". These allowed images that were painted on glass to be projected on a screen.
1825: The first optical toy was developed. This toy consisted of two disks placed back to back with images on each disk. When the disks were twirled, the images looked as if they were one.
1831: A machine was developed aimed at creating an illusion of movement by viewing images while facing a mirror through slits.
1834: Another invention was created. This invention consisted of series of images placed on a revolving drum containing slits. This created the illusion of movement when spun.
My Reflection:
I think it is quite interesting to know the early history of animation. It's crazy how far back animation goes!
