Stop Motion and Cel Animation

 Unit 4  Activity 3

Two types of animation will be discussed in this post: Stop Motion Animation and Cel Animation.

Stop Motion Animation:

This type of animation involves still objects appear to move by taking multiple shots and putting them together. This process takes a lot of time and effort. (Slides)

Materials Needed:

  • Digital camera with large memory
  • Computer editing software
  • Objects such as paper, clay toys, Legos, etc.
  • Suitable lighting
  • Do-able idea
  • Storyboard

Cel Animation:

This animation technique involves hand-drawing pictures and is super time consuming. (Slides)

Process:
  • Idea and storyboard are created
  • Objects, movements, backgrounds and scenes are decided on.
  • An animator draws rough sketches
  • Another animator cleans up the sketches and inserts any necessary in-between frames.
  • These cels are then taken to the inbetweener. They then draw the rest of the action to complete movement.
  • Cels are traced to make sure they are lined up
  • Cels are inked and pained. Backgrounds added when filming

My Reflection:

I think animation is cool but it is quite a grueling process to create one. It takes so much time and             effort.
