Web Design Terms and Principles

This post will define a few terms related to web design, as well as some other information related to web design principles. Web Design will be the last unit for this blog!

Terms:
Internet - worldwide connection of computers that send information using IP
Browser - program that allows people to view information on the web
HTML - stands for HyperText Mark-up Language and is one of the languages used to communicate with a browser
WWW - stands for World Wide Web and refers to all the web pages stored on the Internet
HTTP - stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. A set of standards that allows users to access the web
URL - stands for Uniform Resource Locator. The web address given to a specific page
Tags - intructions that make up HTML codes
Hexadecimal - code describing colours
Background - area of a web page that is behind the images, text, tables, and other contents
Emphasize - method used to make a text on a web page stand out. Could be done by underlining, bolding, and/or italicized
Hyperlink - a link that takes a user outside of their current web page
Special Characters - special character codes are used to add characters that are used for tags to create web pages

There are numerous don'ts when designing a web page. These include, but are not limited to:
- Not planning your site
- Slow loading caused by large images
- Poor colours and fonts that prevent visitors from properly reading your text.
- Flashing graphics that move around or flash
- Poor spelling and grammar mistakes
- Poor layout and page length. Visitors should find info in three clicks or less
- Links that don't work or are broken
- Old and outdated information
- Orphan pages that do not link back to a home page or original info.
- Designing your website for you, not your visitors
